Terms of Service

Version 1.0 · Effective September 7, 2026

These terms form the agreement between you and Lemonbudget for the use of the service. Please read the section on your recovery key and on what the service is not — they matter more than the rest.

1. The agreement

Lemonbudget is run by Lemonbudget, a non-commercial project operated by a private individual in Switzerland. By creating an account you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.

2. Who may use it

You must be at least 16 years old, and you must have the legal capacity to enter into a contract to the extent that any feature requires it. You may use the service for personal or household budgeting.

3. Your account and your recovery key

You are responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for activity carried out through your account. Tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.

We cannot recover your encrypted labels

Your custom names, descriptions and notes are encrypted with a key derived from your password. The DEK itself is not stored in plaintext; it is encrypted by a key derived from your session token, and a second copy is encrypted by your recovery key. If you lose both your password and your recovery key, we cannot reconstruct the DEK and your encrypted labels become unreadable. Structural and numeric data such as amounts, dates, currencies and account balances remain in the database, but may no longer be meaningful without the names and descriptions. We cannot make an exception for you. Export your data periodically.

4. What the service is, and what it is not

Lemonbudget is a free tool for recording and analysing money you tell it about. It shows you budgets, forecasts, trends and goals derived from your own entries.

Not financial advice

Nothing the service produces is financial, investment, tax or legal advice. Forecasts are arithmetic projections of the numbers you entered, not predictions, and they carry no assurance of accuracy. Decisions you take remain yours, and you should consult a qualified professional before acting on anything you see here.

You are responsible for the accuracy of what you enter, including any imported or scanned data, and for keeping your own records where law or your accountant requires it.

The service is provided as-is and without any warranty of any kind, beyond what the law makes unwaivable. We may discontinue it, limit features or take it down for maintenance at any time. We will give you reasonable notice and a window to export your data if we decide to stop operating it entirely.

5. No charge, no guarantee

The service is currently provided free of charge. We may add paid features in the future; if we do, the terms in effect at the time you subscribe will govern payment, and we will notify you clearly before any charge is made.

Because the service is unfunded, we cannot promise any level of availability, support or continuity. Please export your data regularly.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the service unlawfully, or to launder money or disguise the proceeds of crime.
  • Attempt to access another user’s account or data.
  • Probe, scan or overload our infrastructure, or circumvent rate limits and usage quotas.
  • Scrape the service, or resell or redistribute it without our written agreement.
  • Upload malware, or content you have no right to upload.

We may suspend an account that breaches this section, and will tell you why unless doing so would help an attacker.

7. Your data stays yours

You own everything you put into the service. You grant us only the narrow licence needed to store, encrypt, transmit and display it back to you, and to whichever workspace members you have chosen to share it with. We claim no other rights over it, and we do not use it to train models.

You can export your data at any time, and you can delete your account at any time. Our handling of personal data is described in the Privacy Policy.

8. Shared workspaces

If you invite someone into a workspace, they can see the financial data in it. You are responsible for whom you invite. If you delete your account while owning a shared workspace, ownership passes to another member so their records survive; if you are the only member, the workspace is deleted with your account.

9. Liability

We are liable without limitation for damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence, for personal injury, and wherever Swiss or applicable mandatory consumer law forbids a limitation.

Otherwise, in a free, non-commercial service like this one, our total liability is limited to the higher of CHF 100 and the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profit, or lost data or lost recovery keys where the loss was not caused by us.

Nothing here limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by contract.

10. Termination

You may stop using the service and delete your account at any time. We may terminate this agreement for a material breach of these terms, or on 30 days’ notice if we cease operating the service. On termination your right to use the service ends; export your data first.

11. Changes to these terms

We may amend these terms. For material changes we will notify you by email at least 30 days in advance. If you do not accept the change, you may terminate before it takes effect; continuing to use the service afterwards means you accept it.

12. Governing law and jurisdiction

This agreement is governed by Swiss law, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.

If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of your country of residence, nor of the right to bring proceedings in the courts of that country where the law gives it to you.

If a provision of these terms is invalid, the rest remains in force.
